I learned to fly cast as a teenager, knee-deep in the Meramec River, figuring out the rhythm of the line before I ever understood the art behind it. Spending summers working for rafting outfitters, I got to know the river in a different way -learning its rhythms, its moods, and the unique connection people have with it.

In 2009, I picked up another piece of that tradition, building split bamboo fly rods by hand. There’s something special about working with bamboo—crafting each rod with patience, precision, and respect for the generations who did it before me. I spent hours studying the greats—H.L. Leonard, Everett Garrison, and the old Wes Jordan Orvis rods—learning how they turned raw material into something that felt alive in an angler’s hand. Their work set the standard for craftsmanship, and while I carry that tradition forward, I also embrace innovation. That’s why I build cutting-edge carbon fiber fly rods, pushing performance while honoring the soul of fly fishing.

The idea for White Buffalo Fly Shop was born the way all the best things are—on the way to the river among good friends. We were on a fly-fishing trip to Livingston, Montana, a place that felt like a tribute to new beginnings. The idea really came to life after a few Cold Smoke Scotch Ales at The Murray Bar, a spot where stories flow as easily as the drinks. Sitting among old and new friends, talking about the sport we love, we imagined a place where anglers—experienced and brand new alike—could gather, learn, and be part of something bigger than just fishing.

This shop wouldn't exist without the right people. My Bride, Reagan, has been my grounded support through this journey, believing in the dream even when it was just an idea. And we owe so much to the generosity of good friends—those who offered advice, lent a hand, and made sure we saw this through to opening day. White Buffalo Fly Shop isn’t just a flyshop. It’s a place built on tradition and community, a place where old stories are told, new ones are written, and the river is always calling. Whether you’re here to gear up, swap stories, or simply learn the art of the cast, you’re always welcome.

Join us on the journey. Stop by the shop, check out our latest rods and gear, or just come in for a conversation about the best hatches of the season.
